(Above): On the southern edge of the Harz mountains, during First US Army’s advance to Leipzig, the 3rd Armored and 104th Infantry Divisions of Collins’ VII Corps found underground factories around Nordhausen, where V-weapons and jet aircraft were assembled. Discovered on 11 April, the main site was codenamed Mittelbau (Central Construction). By 1945, some 26 per cent of Germany’s workforce were slaves, usually kept in conditions of appalling cruelty. At Nordhausen, 60,000 inmates passed through a network of thirty-eight aboveground camps, the largest named Dora. (Below): Clad in their striped woollen prison garb, these reluctant workers had little incentive to make such complicated weapons as jets, V-1 flying bombs and V-2 rockets.
